Facial tattoos of the Derung Peoples
Facial tattoos are existent in quite a few cultures and ethnic groups worldwide. For the elder women of the Drung (独龙) ethnic minority, it is their heritage that will perish soon; the government banned the practice during the 1950s-60s. There currently are no tattooers that do the traditional practice. In 2015, the government recognized the cultural significance of the practice and considered those who still wear the tattoos “living fossils.” Thus, research and preservation work began as scholars began to interview those elderly women and research their facial tattoos.
